Mage: The Uncertainty

A discussion about the setting

JamesP: I think the Victorian era would be great fun! Certainly my pick out of the ones suggested.

Loyhargil: Well, I’m up for any other suggestions too. Sci-fi/alternative future?

Joe: Wild West! The advent of the automobile and the coming of the railroads, gold rush, gatlin guns, smallpox, snake oil and the sundance; the new magic versus the old. All that plus Mexican bandits. Just mind to keep the flies off your tortillas!

A discussion about the setting

Well, the big belief triptych in Mage is formed of religion, science and magic. The wild west certainly lends itself well to that. The more traditional Victorian setting does too, with evolution, spiritualism and the church. As a GM, I’d seek to avoid making the game too similar to other settings (such as Deadlands or Space: 1899) but that’s my problem!

A discussion about the setting

My inclination would actually be for modern day, but I need to spend some time reading the wiki to get a better handle on the game. A Heroes like flavour would certainly be interesting for example !I have for some reason this strange idea of playing a High Energy Physicist who dabbles in the black arts ( or should that be white ? Or fuchsia ? What colour are the arts in Mage exactly ???), when he’s not smashing atoms. No idea at all if that makes anysense whatsoever, but it’s what occurred to me.

I’d also be quite happy to commit to something a bit more regular than just an idle few games over several months. Though everything has to start somewhere of course ;)

A discussion about the setting

Well, another advantage of a modern day setting is that the players could be introduced to the world more naturally, rather than having to assimilate a whole load of mechanics and game world history. So don’t worry too much about the background on wikis and the like. It’ll be nice to have the PCs form their own idea of what the reality of the genre is!

All this discussion about history has given me the germ of an idea, anyway. I’m happy to try and get a campaign going, but initially it’ll be baby steps! October is the date to aim for….

A discussion about the setting

Ive never played Mage so would be interested in giving it a try but i dont know how available i will be to start a new campaine

A discussion about the setting

Leaving aside my own ponderings as to why we’re not using the wiki for this discussion, heh, I’d like to reiterate that I’m interested in the game, but at the moment I can’t really commit to anything. So I’ll keep an eye out, but probably not say much. :)

A discussion about the setting

Regarding it being a new campaign: as I say, one step at a time – let’s get the first session organised before planning the campaign! I’m hoping it’ll be self-contained and have leads which will go into a longer story but who knows?

Matt, I’m confused: are you referring to the gaming weekend wiki (which not everyone here belongs to)? Or are you being subversive and dadaist, discussing on a wiki why we we’re not discussing on a wiki…?

A discussion about the setting

That’s so like Matt, being a subversive dadaist. shakes head

A discussion about the setting

Well, we’re using the comments page of the Adventure Log rather than the actual wiki function itself.

Sorry, I appear to have derailed the discussion, much in the nature of a large block of metal. Ignore me! Carry on!

A discussion about the setting

OK then. So let’s aim to get the ball rolling in October. When might people be around? Are weekends or weekdays better? At the moment I’m fancy-free for October, so I can accommodate various plans.

And where? I’m happy to open my doors but the south London location may be out of the way. I’d rather play at someone’s house than a pub – any offers? As I say, I don’t mind paying host myself, and once we’ve got the first session off the ground we can see how people feel about locations, timings and whether they want to commit. :)

A discussion about the setting

Weekends are good for me, maybe every other weekend or something along those lines. If you are happy to host then great, I can let rip with a silly character voice without fear of offending/frightening off other pub users!

A discussion about the setting

I’d be happy with either a weekday (not Wed) or weekend game (not Sun). I can’t offer to host unfortunately, no room in the shared digs I’m currently at.

A discussion about the setting

OK then! Let’s get cracking!

I’d rather have Matt involved, seeing as this shebang was started by him in the first place. Saturdays aren’t so good for him but he can make them occasionally. A Saturday would be preferable. If none of the dates below are any cop then I’ll start again trying to sort a weekday date out:

  • Saturday October 4th
  • Saturday October 11th
  • Saturday October 18th
  • Saturday October 25th

What do people reckon?

A discussion about the setting

I can make all of those. If Sat’s are bad for Matt I could certainly try to make the occasional Sun – it’s typically the day my Dark Heresy group meets though and we have enough trouble getting together as it is. Maybe we could alternate or something ?

Oh, do I have to do something to offically join this campaign in obsidian portal or do you have to invite me John ? The only options I have under campain are “create new campaign”.

A discussion about the setting

I think weekends are generally bad for Matt rather than just Saturdays. You never know, this might all end up being very easy to organise. (Looks hopeful.)

I’ve invited you to the campaign. Your collective enthusiasm is my creative engine!

A discussion about the setting

Yup, I’m in ta !

Ah, okay, we’ll just see how it goes then. Free most week days as well.

A discussion about the setting

I was chatting to James tonight and sounded like I was trying to dissuade him from reading up on Mage. Feel free to read up on the game, of course! I’ll change much of the stuff for the session itself, of course, and no-one should feel it’s necessary to get any grounding in the game before the first session… but thanks for the enthusiasm, knock yourselves out!

A discussion about the setting

I hope I can be in on this, but it’s still up in the air at the moment, much to Louise’s annoyance. Her work are back to being completely rubbish, it seems.

A discussion about the setting

Afraid I still can’t say for certain what dates I’ll be available. I’ll do so ASAP though.

Any more thoughts on the setting/period? I’d love to have something concrete so I can start planning my character! I’m still in favour of a Victorian England game, but I’d certainly settle for any time and place.

A discussion about the setting

At the moment, I’m leaning towards a modern-day setting, because that’ll give the players the chance to see what I’m aiming at with the version of Mage I’m hoping to create. Once you know what kind of thing I have in mind, then we can think about other time periods and so on. The first session should be self-contained but will, I hope, have the potential to lead on to a further story if people want to pursue it.

A discussion about the setting

I’ve added a few brief notes which I hope help people get their PC juices going. If, for some reason, you really don’t want to play a mage but still fancy taking part then let me know and we can sort something out.
